  • Questionnaire from the Alibi — My Answers

    Name: Mike Blessing
Party: Libertarian Party / Boston Tea Party
    District: 16
    Website: http://mike4nmh16-2010.blogspot.com/
    1. What qualifies you for this position?

I am a sapient (self-aware) resident, registered voter and taxpayer of the District.

What qualifies me over my opponent? What qualifies him over me? What qualifies either of us over any other resident of the District?

Beware the person who tells you that they have all the answers to all of your problems, if only you surrender a bit of your liberty to them. To paraphrase what Lord Acton said, “Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. All great men are bad men.” And no, I don’t see myself as being immune to this tendency.

    2. What should be done to address ethics reform and transparency?

Open up all closed-door conference committees in the Legislature.

Require that all State spending over $1000.00 be posted to a publicly-viewable website within twenty-four hours. Considering that you can be tracked in real time when you use your credit card to pay for gas, fast food, etc., this is a very doable idea.

Allow private citizens to make audio and video recordings of all Legislative and regulatory-agency proceedings.

    3. How can we balance the state’s budget?

We can start by using a zero-services baseline, and put all of the State budget onto the table for discussion.

As for cutting specific budget items, we can start with the Rail Runner and the Film Office.

Refrain from expanding existing programs without cause, or from creating new programs or agencies that do the jobs of existing agencies or programs. Consolidate duplicative programs and agencies. Require every agency and program to justify its existence and budget on an annual basis.

    4. Should New Mexico allow domestic partnerships for same-sex couples?

Inasmuch as the State requires any form of permission slip for two consenting adults to engage in romantic or sexual relations, the State should NOT discriminate against anyone of the gay / lesbian / bisexual / transgender / polyamorous / kinky persuasions, especially when it’s often clear that such discrimination is done just because of this factor.

Still, it should be remembered that marriage-licensing laws started out under “Jim Crow” in the post-Reconstruction South as a way to enforce segregation, by outlawing interracial marriages between whites and blacks.

    5. Do you favor rehabilitation instead of jail time for nonviolent drug offenders?

The current “rehabilitation” programs offered by the State as an alternative to jail or prison can often be more intrusive and onerous than incarceration.

Instead, let’s try repealing the stupidity, insanity and evil known as Drug Prohibition. Consider that all it really does is corrupt law enforcement. Until I hear otherwise, I will assume that anyone who supports Drug Prohibition also supports the 10,000 drug-related murders per year in America caused by Drug Prohibition. Drugs being illegal won’t stop people from wanting them, and someone else will find ways to make money providing them.

    6. What do you think of the state’s film initiatives?

The Film Office is just as much a corporate welfare handout program as was Isotopes Stadium when it was built, as is the Balloon Fiesta Park. Eliminate them from the public budgets, and then cut the gross receipts tax, cut the personal income tax, so that poor people can save some more money to support their kids. Let the Hollywood studios, all owned by multimillionaires, pay their own way. How many of the jobs created by the production companies still exist after the movie is completed?

    7. How can we improve public education?

APS is one of the State’s biggest spenders and employers, yet apparently the following was written by someone in the eighth grade:

ABOUT THE “All Work, No Play” article, I disagree with the run artical on how if the students do poorly on the standard based test then they cant have an elective. I feel bad that you feeled on the test.

      See http://tinyurl.com/2a7fmuf for more.

And we should give APS MORE money?! When I was that age, I would have been ashamed to write that. Is APS even fixable?

I’m more focused on charter schools, private schools, and homeschoolers.

    8. Should New Mexico change its laws surrounding immigration?

All of this hysteria about Mexicans coming north like Genghis Khan’s Golden Horde is just that – hysteria. Joe Miller, the Alaska GOP’s candidate for U.S. Senate, unwittingly reinforced my point when he said that East Germany was “effective” about enforcing its border around West Berlin – http://tinyurl.com/25mf2ml – nice guy, isn’t he?

Seriously, what kind of society do we want to end up with – one with fences, walls, scanners, regulations and subgun-toting guards all over the place, or one where people can interact with each other on a basis of voluntary consent?

    9. What kind of infrastructure improvements does your district require?

The usual kinds that just about every other district needs – the roads are the most visible ones. Driving around some parts of Albuquerque can be like four-wheeling, considering the potholes, cracks, bumps, etc. that I often see around town. This is what we spend millions on road bonds for every two years?! There has to be a better way to build roads.

One thing that needs doing around here is speed-bump removal – people still routinely go over them at 40 MPH, and I wouldn’t want to be a patient in an ambulence going over them.

    10. What issues do your constituents care about most?

I haven’t had the cash to do any surveys or polling, but I’m guessing that they would want their individual rights to life, liberty, property and the pursuit of happiness to be respected by State government. I suspect that they want to provide for themselves and their families in a productive manner by interacting with others on a basis of mutual consent. State (and local, and federal) government should do what it can to defend that liberty, while not infringing that same liberty. Other than protecting those freedoms, government should leave people to their own devices.

  • Questionnaire from the Alibi — Mark Curtis Responds

    Name: Mark Curtis
    Party: Libertarian Party
    District: 19
    Website: none. not a netizen
    1. What qualifies you for this position?

not a professional politician. not the incumbent. have some appreciation of the limits of government.

    2. What should be done to address ethics reform and transparency?

would support strengthening of limits on gifts and favors. mostly, voters need to choose candidates who have higher standards. we can’t really legislate ethical behavior.

    3. How can we balance the state’s budget?

limit growth in expenditures. reduce employee numbers by 15-20 %. pay state employees no better than private sector. tighter controls on state benefits.

    4. Should New Mexico allow domestic partnerships for same-sex couples?

what over-riding interest does the state have in limiting them? civil law is quite capable of handling questions of joint property and child custody. once an “M” corporation license is issued, the partnered persons are espoused. “marriage” ceremonies can be performed at the discretion of the various institutions.

    5. Do you favor rehabilitation instead of jail time for nonviolent drug offenders?

nonviolent drug offenders: what is the states interest in choice of recreational activities? most of the social problems associated with recreational drug use derive from its illegality. we have public and private programs for problem drinkers and gamblers. why criminal penalties for drug users?

    6. What do you think of the state’s film initiatives?

I like to have films produced here and am not, for now, opposed to temporary tax rebates. I would much prefer that we create a more business friendly regulatory and tax structure for all businesses.

    7. How can we improve public education?

the states virtual monopoly on primary and secondary education is at the root of our education problems. initially, a program of “backpack” vouchers that would follow the student to whatever institution their parents choose would provide funding for the most capable instructors to establish their own schools. eventually, most students would attend private schools.

    8. Should New Mexico change its laws surrounding immigration?

I do not approve of issuing state drivers licenses to undocumented aliens. there is an international drivers license for temporary visitors. at the national level, immigration quotas should be increased substantially. movement across the borders for temporary employment purposes should be easy to reduce the incentive to bring family to the relatively high cost of living states.

    9. What kind of infrastructure improvements does your district require?

do you mean “what kind of pork will you bring to your district”? None. the city or county could spend quite a bit on old water and sewer lines and some of the streets and curbs are in need of repair or replacement but, I don’t see these as legitimate state issues.

    10. What issues do your constituents care about most?

beyond education, I have no idea. most of our discussions have been about runaway state and federal spending and the growing federal interference in matters rightfully left to the states, like education.

  • J.D. Wilmeth on Local Law Enforcement

    Wilmeth for Sheriff banner

Will’s Solution to Local Law Enforcement
    Newsletter: 5 September 2010

Our county faces a growing crisis. Every year, law enforcement agencies seek to increase their budget and their manpower. These requests are accompanied by the same argument – “with more police and more or better equipment we can cut down on crime.” Yet, consistently, the opposite is what occurs. Our communities see an increase in crime, and often a rise in more violent crimes.

The conclusion is inescapable. Present police methods DO NOT WORK. Current methods of patrol, where units work an area in a random pattern, watching for criminal activity, and police are deployed to provide a certain amount of personnel throughout a 24 hour period does not result in a decrease in crime.

Our present Sheriff is a supporter of this method of law enforcement. He points to 24 hour patrol, a new building, and a full complement of personnel as well as his personal involvement in a large number of community advisory boards as evidence of success. Unfortunately our primary goal of lowering the crime rates, arresting offenders and keeping the peace remains unimproved. The Sheriff Department may look good, but its not performing as well as it could.

My solution involves returning to a simpler, more direct method of law enforcement that is in keeping with the vision of our Founding Fathers and based in the U.S. Constitution. Consider this; the majority of citizens are law-abiding, honest, hard-working people who want safer streets, order and less crime. Further, in every community, the vast amount of criminals are known, not only by law enforcement, but by the members of the community themselves. Finally, crimes do not occur in a vacuum. In other words, multiple burglaries occur, not just one. Oilfield larcenies occur in groups, not in single events. So why do those of us in law enforcement assume random patrols and 24 hour coverage are going to catch the majority of criminals?

It may be politically incorrect to say this but the truth of the matter is that, as peace officers, our duties are not to regulate the conduct of law-abiding citizens, or force their “compliance,” rather, our duty is to seek out, properly investigate, and arrest (based on probable cause) those members of our society who prey on others. While doing this we have an over-riding duty to protect everyone’s constitutional rights.

My solution involves recognizing that the majority of crimes are committed by a limited amount of criminals, most of whom are already known to law enforcement. The records sections of local law enforcement agencies are full of information on criminals who have been handled for certain types of crimes, and the amount of unserved arrest warrants is staggering. In my proposed methodology, the Sheriff’s Department will deploy its force based on the actual threats, rather than the possibility of the presence of a threat. We will:

    1. Cease random, unfocused patrols and minimize our response to non-criminal events that do not require enforcement activities.
    2. Research local criminal trends for type, location, and method.
    3. Deploy our units in a focused response to those specific threats and make an arrest as soon as possible.
    4. Watch for and react to situations of opportunity as we investigate crimes to stop those crimes that we observe.
    5. We will expend our resources on stopping the criminal, not policing the public at large.

  • Unsolicited Good Press in the Alibi

Even when we’re dead in the water, we can still get good press – It Ain’t Easy Being Green – Or Libertarian, or Independent . . .

Here’s the important part of the article for right now[1]:

    Libertarians

Though New Mexico has no third-party candidates in statewide or national races this year, the Libertarians do have two for state Legislature seats, which represent small districts. The Libertarians filed the necessary signatures to get their party on the ballot and then collected more for their candidates.

Mike Blessing is running as a write-in in District 16 against Democratic Rep. Antonio “Moe” Maestas. Mark Curtis is running in District 19 on the ballot against Republican Anthony Romo and Democratic incumbent Rep. Sheryl Williams Stapleton[2]. The Libertarian Party is a minor party in New Mexico with 2,249 members as of March 2010.

The state’s Libertarian chairperson, Jay Vandersloot, says the point is not to disrupt election results. “Some people say the Libertarian Party draws votes from Republicans, and some say it pulls from Democrats. Libertarians are fiscally conservative and ideologically liberal. Our purpose is not to draw votes from another party.” Instead, he says, they’re in the race to win. They also want to promote an ideology that upholds the Constitution, and values liberty and freedom. “Candidates have been swayed by other candidates.”

But it’s hard for the party to find contenders. “The Libertarian view is such that we just want to be able to live our lives without interference from others or government,” Vandersloot says. “So a lot of us are not interested in running in politics. Those that do run feel strongly enough that they need to get in there – not to be a career politician – but to get in there and make a change for the better.”

  • Mullins, Martinez, and Giuliani

    Current mood: cynical
    Dear New Mexicans,

Tom Mullins was at a Rio Rancho Tea Party rally last night. About 50+ attended. Enthusiasm was high, the meeting well organized. Tom is still strong and determined. He is said to be within 4 to 5 points of Lujan.

Tom Mullins is, in my opinion, an unprincipled eqivocating slanderer and libeler.

IF Mullins tops Lujan in the general election . . .

Considering the demographics of the district and the comments that Mullins has made after getting the GOP nomination (joking about landmines on the southern border, “there weren’t too many white faces” at the Kewa Pueblo ceremony), that’s a BIG “IF.”

But IF that were to happen, the Third District would have just as good a representative as the First had with Heather Wilson.

I’d like Mullins to list for New Mexican voters TEN (10) existing federal spending programs that, as a Congressman, he will sponsor repeals of within a week of being seated in Congress.

Richard T. (sorry, I didn’t write down his full name) told us about the RRTP plan for the next 27 days to get out the vote. It’s so well thought out, so purposeful and practical, I was riveted. This plan is going to bowl Lujan out of office. I hope to be able to take part in it.

The plan’s originators have decided to share their idea with other TPs as a blueprint for success. Well done, RRTP.

Ah, but look at who this plan will replace Lujan with. Utterly repulsive.

Far better to leave Lujan in office than replace him with Mullins. Better an up-front enemy than a backstabber professing friendship.

When Mullins first come out from under his rock as a challenger to Adam Kokesh, one of Adam’s supporters drafted a document titled “Tom Mullins – Ben Ray Lujan’s Best Friend.”[1]. When Adam heard about it, he quashed it immediately, as he wanted to run a clean, issues-based campaign. Adam was rewarded for this with a smear campaign on the part of Mullins:

Blowback Comes Home to New Mexico / GOT ADAM!

    Other info:

    1. Latest polls on Martinez/Denish race has Martinez 6 pts ahead of Denish. This was confirmed on 3 different networks. That’s a strong win-win signal for the NM GOP slate.

For me, Martinez comes across as a Tom Mullins in a skirt, with a bit of an “off-switch,” in that she is more guarded in her comments.

As for principles, I have just as much faith and confidence in her as I do in Tom Mullins.

    3. Tom Mullins will be debating Lujan on PBS—Channel 5 here in ABQ. That’s KNME. Set for Sunday, Oct. 10. Call the station for time our area. Tom will be at the Tanoan Forum.

Let’s see – he’s joked about planting landmines along the southern border. He’s complained about the lack of “white faces” at a Kewa Pueblo ceremony that he was invited to attend.

Who will he offend next? The black population? Asians? Jews?

Does he even realize what he’s doing when he makes these sorts of comments?

I suspect that he could complain about my comments – he’s got every right as a Tourette’s-American to make these sorts of comments.

    4. Re Jon Barela’s race: Former mayor of NYC and former presidential candidate Rudy Guiliani will be coming to ABQ on Sunday October 12 to support Jon’s efforts. I will be getting location and time, today after lunch. I’ll try to send to you.

    Ewww. Ugh.

After reading that paragraph, I feel like I need a shower. Or better yet, a full HAZMAT scrubdown.

This is Rudy-poo Giuliani we’re talking about here – the same Rudy-poo who, prior to running for president in 2008, never met a restriction on gun owners he didn’t like.

This is the same Rudy-poo who said in 1993:

“We look upon authority too often and focus over and over again, for thirty or forty or fifty years, as if there is something wrong with authority. We see only the oppressive side of authority. Maybe it comes out of our history and our background. What we don’t see is that freedom is not a concept in which people can do anything they want, be anything they can be. Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do.”
    – Rudy Giuliani, The New York Times, 20 March 1994

    More goodies at http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Rudy_Giuliani

Will Rudy-poo show up at the Jon Barela fundraiser wearing his prom dress?

Will Donald Trump show up and shove his face in Rudy-poo’s cleavage?

A Republican Party that embraces Rudy-poo Giuliani is NOT a Republican Party that I can support.

  • Tom Knapp on DIY Think Tanks

Tom Knapp always has interesting things to say. In this case, it’s do-it-yourself professional issue advocacy:

Project Outline: Think Tank / Policy Institute in a Box

In this article, Tom lays out a plan for someone wanting to set up a think tank or policy institute for peanuts. Well, not literally peanuts, but you get the idea.

One of the plans he lays out totals up to Ø10,000, while the other adds up to Ø2,500.

  • Tweedle Fascist “vs” Tweedle Socialist ?

    Current mood: cynical

In this election cycle’s gubernatorial race, we’ve got Tweedle Fascist and Tweedle Socialist playing games with rhetoric over tax hikes and spending cuts.

Bailing Out New Mexico: How It May Be Done

Monahan speculates that a 2002-style raid on the permanent fund is imminent AND that Martinez isn’t ruling out her support for such a raid.

Susana Takes Center Lane On Education

Per Monahan, Martinez disavows cutting the public-school budgets, and then disavows Florida-style vouchers.

I just have to wonder – don’t results matter?

Martinez: No Tax Hikes in First Term

Martinez promises no tax hikes in the first term, even while pledging not to cut the (non-productive) public school system.

In the same article, Dipstick Denish proposes Ø450,000,000 in spending cuts over five years, mostly nickel-and-dime stuff.

Conclusion – both candidates leave the free-market voter on the side of the road where taxes and spending are concerned.

    What’s left?!

Second Amendment: Well . . . Martinez promises to leave gun owners alone (I think). Denish complains that the southern border is a “transit point for narcotics and weapons”.

Drug Prohibition: Martinez is an enthusiastic Drug Worrier, who can’t shut up about the “scourge” of various substances upon society. Mind you, Dipstick Denish isn’t really an improvement here – she also supports all sorts of police-state-style crackdowns in the name of “eradicating meth.” The big difference between the two is over the State’s medical-marijuana program – Denish supports maintaining it as is (see here, warts and all), while Martinez wants to shut it down, as “it’s a violation of federal law.” (What part of Art.I, Sec.8 authorizes the federals to outlaw plant products? So much for Martinez being a “Constitutionalist” !)

As Bill Koehler frequently points out, any activity that’s peaceful (doesn’t involve initiating force upon anyone else) should be legal. It doesn’t matter whether we’re talking about which private school you want to enroll your kids in, or whether you want to homeschool them. If you want to paint the word “TAXI” on the side of your car and offer people rides around town for money, that’s OK, regardless of whether you’ve been sanctioned by the PRC. Why should the little kids with the lemonade stand have to get business licenses and tax stamps?!

I’d like to challenge both of them to name ten (10) existing spending items that they would like to permanently repeal, since the Unanimous Consent Challenge is almost certainly over both of their heads.

by Adam Kokesh on Monday, September 13, 2010 at 11:40pm

Dear friends of liberty and fans of radio ads,

My radio show, Adam Vs The Man on KIVA 1550 AM, has been rocking and rolling for over a month now and the audience has been growing organically without ANY promotion outside of my own facebook page. We have secured a slot on the local public access TV station (Saturday from midnight to 2am)[1] to play the best of the week from our UStream feed from the webcam in the studio. We are also getting more frequent local callers (at first, most callers were from outside of NM, listening or watching online) which is a good sign that more and more people are deliberately tuning in to the radio broadcast!

The broadcast radius covers over one million potential listeners from Santa Fe to Socorro including the entire Albuquerque metro area. We also draw a unique audience of liberty lovers online with a growing base of loyal daily listeners. The audience of Adam Vs The Man tends to be younger, affluent, politically inclined, and of course, spends lots of money on consumer goods and services with a flagrant disregard for authority. Statistics routinely show that a talk show audience is much more engaged and attentive to the broadcast than, for example, an easy listening audience. The point is that our broadcast advertisements do get heard; they are not just background noise.

Without the financial support of sponsors, we cannot maintain our deal with the radio station, but as the show continues to grow, you will be glad to have gotten in while it was cheap! If you are interested in reaching out to the local audience of over one million potential listeners covered by our broadcast radius and our distinct online audience, please consider signing up for one of the following sponsorship packages:

    $150 / week

Sign up for 13 weeks of $350/week sponsorship and it’s 21 more ads. We can do all the audio production here in the studio. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at (505) 899-5029. If you can’t reach me there, please feel free to ask for our executive producer, Mark Owen, or email me at adamvstheman@gmail.com.

Any advertising message takes time to generate a response. We suggest an initial commitment of 13 weeks, which will extend well into the holiday shopping season. After the initial advertising period, we will suggest specific promotional tie-ins to allow each sponsor to measure the direct impact. I would be happy to consider any and all possibilities for on air give-aways of your product or service for free exposure.

Thank you for your continued support of the message of liberty.

    Love, faith, respect,

    Adam Kokesh
