Mike Gravel, Libertarian for President? (2008 campaign)
While surfing the posts at Democratic Underground, I found this entry. Apparently former Senator Mike Gravel (D-AK) is giving up his bid for the Democratic nomination and seeking one from the Libertarian PartyThe post cited an article from the Baltimore Sun — Gravel now seeking Libertarian nod. While Gravel has his libertarian ideas, he’s not consistently libertarian — see this Wikipedia page for the details.
One thing that could kill his campaign as a candidate for the LP is the fact that many states have what are called “sore loser” laws — parts of their election codes say that if a person runs for office under one party’s banner, that person won’t be listed on the ballot after switching to another party, or running without partisan affiliation.
UPDATE — 13 May 2008 12:02 AM — While researching “third party” presidential candidates for another article, I discovered that on 11 March 2008, Mike Gravel had endorsed Green Party candidate Jesse Johnson for President.
